|Yoga with Ved|
In this class we explore more of the details of our multidimensional nature. We also develop the understanding of the purpose of some of the different practices in yoga. Everything that we hold within our being on the many levels is hiding our true nature, our true self. Much of the practice of yoga is trying to remove those obstacles so that our true nature can shine unhindered and express through our being.
Understanding Our Multidimensional Nature - The Koshas
In Yoga there is a very sophisticated system of subtle anatomy. We are all familiar with physical anatomy - that is the skin, muscles, bones, organs and so on. But Yoga describes our being - our body - as having many more layers than just the physical. This is where we explore the idea of the koshas. This Sanksrit word has a meaning like "sheath" or "covering."
Our true nature (that is beyond physical) is said to have many coverings over it. In some traditions we see it described as five koshas, in others seven. For now we will explore it from the understanding that there are five different layers or koshas for us to explore.
Our True Nature
Beyond all of these different layers lies our true nature. The Supreme Self, the pure and pristine consciousness. It is all pervasive and all is held within it. It is this Self that is described as infinite, eternal, and invulnerable.
But our living experience is generally not in touch with our true nature. That deeper part of ourselves is shrouded by what is held through the many layers of our being.
We can think of our true nature being like a source of light. That light is always shining within our being. But imagine that this light has to shine through a window, and the glass on the window is not clean.
In that case the light has not stopped shining, but our experience of the light is different. It may seem dimmer, we actually get caught up seeing the dirt on the window pane, rather than the light that is coming through.
This is a very simple way to understand how our multidimensional being is working. That inner light of our true self is always on and shining. But there is stuff or dirt along the different layers of our being, held in our koshas.
If we want to experience that inner light fully then we have to begin cleaning up the window pane, we have to begin cleaning up all the stuff that is held in our different levels of being.
