Developing life-long wellness.
The balance between conscious eating and conscious activity.
The Weight Loss for Wellness programme focuses on three themes: personal vision, conscious eating and conscious activity. At this stage in the programme we need to look at the big picture again. How do these three different areas support us in our weight management goals?
Keeping our personal vision of wellness and happiness is a given. We know that by holding onto that vision we can energize it into reality. That is the direction and intention of our efforts.
Conscious eating and conscious activity go hand in hand for weight management. In any kind of weight management system we understand that we have to watch what we eat and get enough activity. These two work together to create the right conditions for wellness.
If we are trying to lose a few pounds in pursuit of wellness then the amount of activity we do will need to exceed the amount of energy from the food we take in. This is where we get into the idea of counting calories. In order to use up the fat that is stored in the body we have to start using it as fuel, and ensure that we are not adding back to what is there.
Likewise if we are trying to add a few pounds, looking for a healthier weight, then we have to ensure that we are taking in enough food that covers our fuel needs and just a little bit more. That little bit more regenerates the body and adds to the muscle that we are developing from our activity.
The important detail in all of this is that we must be conscious. That means that we have to be very aware of how much and what we are eating. We also need to be very conscious of how much activity we do and how it is contributing to our weight.
Working towards balance naturally leads to holistic health
We all have ideas about what our ideal weight looks like. But is that weight that we have in our minds our ideal weight? How can we know? This is a tough question to answer. I do know that Yoga will offer to us that we need to be sensitive and conscious to make sure that we are not thinking we have to be a certain weight.
Rather we should seek balance and optimum wellness. By being conscious of our food, our activity, and holding onto our vision of good health - we will move steadily towards our ideal weight. Again let me reiterate, whatever number we have in our mind may not be the what is best.
We need to be open to discovering what our ideal weight can be. That is where we feel fulfilled, healthy, and able to engage with life in the best way possible. As we work towards a balanced lifestyle we will not have to go looking for our ideal weight. Instead it will come knocking at our door.
This has been my personal experience of Yoga. The more that I stay disciplined with the practice and deeper I go, the greater balance I feel. I could not have imagined that this is what yoga offered without actually committing to the practice seriously and discovering what was there.
Yoga has helped me to look closely at my diet to see how it can be tuned up, not just for wellness, but for peak performance. It has guided me in my physical practice towards greater health, strength, and flexibility. Yoga has revealed all the ways in which my mind and heart works against me, and helped me to transform those patterns.
I have seen yoga give incredible transformation and support to many others: my friends, family, and students. Together we strive for greater balance through the practice and continue to grow in our wellness.
Learning to balance our inner energies.
Once we have brought greater balance within our being our natural tendency is to explore. We feel empowered to take on the challenges of the world and within ourselves. That is when Yoga offers something that nothing else on Earth can.
It shows us how to explore beyond the physical. Yoga guides us to discover that we are much more than physical beings. The next big step that we take is in learning and exploring energy awareness. We go beyond just the physical body to experience that we are beings of energy living in a physical body.
Now we can learn to bring balance, not through physical solutions such as eating and exercise, but through the energy dimension of life. This for me is a great excitement. There is an entirely different adventure for us to embark on within ourselves.
When we make that shift into energy awareness we feel a great thrill in working with ourselves. Now it is an amazing inner discovery of how we can transform our physical body through energy!
