Thank you all for the overwhelming positive response to this initiative... Wisdom Wednesday! This is my second episode. In this week I shared the spiritual purpose of anger. But of course we need to learn to resolve our unconscious patterns with anger before we can learn to use anger consciously.
You can watch the video and read on from my notes. I hope that you will continue to reflect on anger in your life.
Recap from last week
In our previous Wisdom Wednesday these were the points that surfaced:
Learn to see anger as energy
When we can look at anger in a neutral way, simply as a form of energy, then we can work with it more skillfully. By looking at the energy component of anger we can understand its influence on us a bit better.
More awareness is critical
Growing our awareness is critical for self-improvement. This means learning to observe ourselves on a deeper level. Work towards being aware of your thoughts, feelings, behaviors and patterns.
Inner cause of anger
Anger arises when there are unmet expectations. We subtly hold an image of our world in our mind and when that image does not match up with the reality we become angry.
Previous week homework
Last week I also gave an exercise to help you work with anger in your being. Of course these activities are just a method to help you become the master of your own life.
If you did not feel inspired to do the activity even though you saw the importance of it... then that must be examined. Remember that only with effort will change come to you.
For those who did try the activity... congratulations on taking a step in self-mastery. I hope you saw the value of the activity and how you can become more skillful in the use of that method as a tool.
What is the purpose of anger?
Have you ever asked yourself this question? Every emotion that we experience has some deeper purpose in our lives... but often we are quite unconscious of the purpose.
Is anger meant to hurt others? Is anger meant to be used as a weapon and to cause suffering? Is the anger energy inherently negative?
No it must be neutral... but when we use it unconsciously it becomes dangerous. That means we want to learn to use anger consciously, which requires us to understand the purpose of the emotion in our lives.
Let's consider this question then. Under what circumstances can anger be positive?
Can anger be positive if you are triggered into anger and then hijacked by it? Of course, we all know the answer. Can anger be positive if we are controlled by it, addicted to that anger energy? No...
It must be that conscious anger, only when we are purposefully choosing it that it becomes positive. Only when we understand how anger works and what it can be used for can it be positive.
So the goal in anger management will be to diffuse the unconscious patterns of anger so we are no longer controlled by that anger energy. It will also be to learn how to use anger consciously in the play of life... since it can serve a spiritual purpose.
Consider the nature of anger energy
Anger is like a wrecking ball. Its like dynamite. It has a destructive quality to it. Can you think of when that is needed?
It serves the purpose of destroying and overcoming negative or dark tendencies. It can be a powerful cleansing emotion.
Let's take an example. I have a student who shares with me often about self-anger. The anger that is coming up with her is trying to help her cleanse the negative patterns or conditioning that is within her.
She says that she will often feel angry towards herself in reaction to certain situations and behaviors. The anger is coming because there is something that wants to change. The spiritual side of her is saying... there is something to be changed her... and so anger comes.
That energy when used consciously can break up the old patterns and remove it from our being.
The energy is trying to rise to be used as a destructive principles towards the negative patterns. The only issues is that the energy is not understood and it is unconscious. So the energy is not well directed to serve its purpose.
Our energies need to be guided by intelligence and wisdom to serve their purpose.
For next week
Awareness activity. Continue to work on becoming more conscious of your anger. As you see the anger rising in your being, use your breathing, observe the feeling of the energy.
Examine the purpose of the anger... what is it directed towards? Examine the cause of the anger... is it justified? Or is it an ego expectation ?
That is where I will leave it for today. As usual I welcome your questions and comments. And of course, I invite you to look deeply at the anger experiences in your own life.
Our next Wisdom Wednesday topic will be - Transforming The Anger Energy
